Day 2 of the sabbatical started strong with a padel session bright and early. It’s interesting how easily I manage to get up in the mornings when padel is on the cards. There’s something about being active by playing a game that gets me going far more easily than any repetitive exercise ever could. I’ll take it.
We’ve also planned a trip to Nature’s Valley for the coming week, and the idea was to take along a newly bought double kayak that I split with my friend Dyl Gibson. I went over to his house to pick it up, and we figured we might as well take it out for a proper paddle session on the ocean at Schoenmakerskop.

It’s whale season here in Port Elizabeth, and while we were out paddling, we saw a few humpback whales breach the water. It was really awesome. I had one of those Walter Mitty moments where, instead of scrambling for my phone to try and take a photo, I just sat there and enjoyed the moment, like Sean Penn’s character at the end of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
Not a bad way to spend a sabbatical day.
